Shri N Venkataramani was one of six siblings , who were born to a senior government officer in the finance department; GOI ; Shri R Narayanswami and his wife Sarada.

Shri Narayanswami was an upright officer who believed and lived by the creed ‘Simple Living High thinking’ which he imbibed in all his children.

In keeping with the family track record, Shri N Venkataramani; excelled academically. He graduated with a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from The Imperial College; London and was recognised as a ‘Fellow’ by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, UK.

He began his career in 1967 with Lucas and soon shifted to India Pistons after his marriage to Sita; the daughter of the founder of the Amalgamations Group, Shri S Anantharamakrishnan.

His genial nature and natural flair for people management helped not only India Pistons but the whole group navigate the ‘70’s; a particularly difficult period with trade unionism for the Industry.He strongly advocated that the employees of an organisation need to be considered as their single most valuable asset

His ability to maintain a cordial and successful relationship with International partners was well known.

India Pistons had had a long standing relationship with T&N Plc UK. However, he felt that with the entry of Japanese manufacturers; India would require access to Japanese technology.

He forged a new JV with NPR of Japan for Steel Piston Rings, a material that was hitherto unknown in the Indian market and a license agreement with Sakura Pistons Japan for manufacture of gasoline pistons for small displacement engines. All this was done while keeping the relationship with T&N Plc intact; who considered NPR Japan and Sakura Pistons Japan as competitors in the International market.

He was a passionate technocrat and was responsible for bringing many contemporary technologies to India. He leveraged his expertise in dealing with International partners to bring new JV’s to the Group. Notable amongst these are Valeo of France and Stanadyne of USA for manufacture of Clutch assemblies and Fuel injection systems respectively.

His engineering and technology expertise ensured that the companies he led always stayed at the cutting edge of technology. India Pistons indigenous development of Composite Coated Rings, IP Rings foray into the unique orbital cold forming process are all credited to his unique understanding of customer and market needs.

His passion for technology development continued till the very end and most recently had laid the foundation for the groups foray into technologies for vehicles of the future.

His interpersonal skills and technology expertise made him an invaluable member of the Amalgamations Group where he served as Vice Chairman of the Group and was on the Board of Simpson’s and Co:, and several of the Groups auto component manufacturing and parts distribution Companies.

He promoted sports with a passion and believed that it built character by playing hard but fair and to react to defeat and victory with equanimity.

He loved playing and supporting both Cricket & Tennis.

He played a vital role in the careers of several cricketers who went on to represent India and Tamil Nadu.

A loving husband, an affectionate father, a loyal friend , he was a thorough gentleman who was valued and loved by all he came in touch with.
